At a time when conflicts and overt wars
characterize the international system, peace should be at the very heart of
each and every person in the world. Never has the world needed peace more than
today. This year’s theme for the International Peace Day is Partnerships for Peace – Dignity for All.
Peace is a
process and not a destination; in this process, partnerships and commitment
from various parties is key to achieving peace. The words of AJ Muste, “There is no way to peace, peace is the way”
are relevant yet today wars are being waged; Today Syria cries for peace as it
is virtually being brought down by ISIL and humanity seems to be failing in
addressing the immigrants who flow to Europe. In Africa the intractable
conflicts claim thousands of lives; Boko Haram in Nigeria, Alshabaab in Kenya
and Somalia and various armed rebel groups in eastern DRC that commit war
crimes and crimes against humanity, denying dignity to people in the areas
proves to us the very fact that Peace is the only battle worth waging.
We call upon
the youths of Africa and the world at large to not only believe in peace but also
act it, peace starts with you and me;
YOUTHS let’s
partner for peace so that we can have a dignified life.
YALDA, let’s
be agents of peace. We must be the change we wish to see in the world-Mahatma
Gandhi. PEACE, LA PAIX, SHALOM.
